Two out of every three community college students experiences food insecurity, meaning “limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, or the ability to acquire such foods in a socially acceptable manner,” Half of all community college students experience home insecurity, including “inability to pay rent or utilities or the need to move frequently.” In addition, 14 percent experience homelessness.
A new report by the Wisconsin HOPE Lab provides insight into food insecurity, homelessness, and housing insecurity among today’s college students. The report is based on the results of a survey distributed by Wisconsin HOPE Lab and the Association of Community College Trustees to 70 community colleges in 24 states.
It also includes information on who these students are and the regions in which they reside, and provides policy recommendations for community colleges, state and federal policymakers, and researchers on ways in which each can support these students and help provide the services they need.
