John Lewis Receives John Hope Franklin Award
U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) received the 2017 John Hope Franklin Award Monday evening at an ACE2017 reception hosted by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education.
The legendary congressman was joined by two other recipients of the 2017 Franklin medal—Wilma J. Roscoe and Samuel L. Myers, former president of Bowie State University from 1967 to 1977. Both were recognized for their work as “longtime guiding forces” behind the National Association for Equal Opportunity (NAFEO), the umbrella advocacy group for historically black colleges and universities.
The Franklin Award, established by Diverse in 2004, pays homage to the extraordinary career of the pioneering historian, scholar and social activist. Past recipients include David Levering Lewis, Maya Angelou and James Comer.
