Even amid a push to improve U.S. education in fields such as science and engineering, it is vital for colleges and universities to continue to stress the importance of the humanities and social sciences to students, say two of our member presidents in an op-ed published today in The Washington Post.
University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman and Stanford University (CA) President John Hennessy write that, “Most successful careers, including in technology and engineering, do not result simply from technical knowledge. They require leadership skills, social and emotional intelligence, cultural understanding, a capacity for strategic decision-making and a global perspective.”
Those of you attending ACE’s 96th Annual Meeting, slated for March 8-11, 2014, in San Diego, can hear President Coleman deliver the Robert H. Atwell lecture at the opening plenary session March 9.
