A recent report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center uses student-level data to examine differences between students earning their first postsecondary credential and those who went back to school to earn additional undergraduate credentials. It finds that a little more than one in five (22.4 percent) undergraduate degree earners had earned a previous credential.

The number of students earning their first undergraduate degree dropped 1.4 percent between 2014-15 and 2015-16. During this same time period, the number of undergraduate students who earned a second or third undergraduate degree increased by 1.7 percent.

The report also provides data on undergraduate degree earners by student characteristics, degree program, and previous credentials earned.
