The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) officially cut the ribbon last week on a project that has been decades in the making, bringing growth to both the campus and the community in which it resides.
The 96,000-square-foot student center will serve as the new hub for campus life, student government, the campus library, career services and more. The center is the first new building on UDC’S campus in 40 years.
UDC hopes that it will serve as a “front porch” to the rest of the community, with an array of retail stores, a conference center and a fitness and wellness center.
The building will also give back to the environment—the structure was constructed to LEED Platinum standards, which will help keep down the building’s carbon footprint and energy usage.
The space was designed by architect Michael Marshall, a UDC alum, who says that he has been dreaming of the space since he was a student.
