Twenty-five years after the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law, Drake University (IA) and its Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement released never-before-seen congressional files and materials on the legislation.
The original photos, memos, personal notes and background documents unveiled July 26 are from the collection of former U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), the author and chief Senate sponsor of the landmark legislation.
The unveiling was accompanied by an archives tour and open house at the Drake University Archives and Special Collections. Over 800 boxes of materials are housed at Drake, a significant portion of which focuses on the ADA, Harkin’s signature legislative accomplishment.
