In honor of the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, a national day dedicated to giving back to the community, we wanted to highlight several of the many institutions who were chosen for the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
Honor Roll distinction is given to higher education institutions that sustain strong community service programs and promote the importance of campus community partnerships. The following four institutions were designated as “Presidential Winners,” the Honor Roll’s top recognition:
California State University, Dominguez Hills
Over 65 percent of California State University, Dominguez Hills’ students participate in the university’s wide variety of community service programs, such as homeless outreach and environmental restoration. Community service is a key component of the campus’ mission, with many of the programs initiated and run by the students themselves.
University of Nebraska Omaha
The University of Nebraska Omaha maintains a strong commitment to community service and engagement through both coursework and co-curricular activities. Through meaningful and sustainable service-learning courses and community-based initiatives and partnerships, students logged over 380,000 hours of service in the 2012-13 school year.
Wheelock College (MA)
A distinguishing characteristic of Wheelock College’s community service program is its mission to improve the lives of children and families. Service-learning is the foundation of the college’s curriculum, and students are engaged in a collaborative dialogue with their local, national and international communities from their first day on campus until graduation.
Loras College (IA)
Loras College devotes a significant portion of its undergraduate curriculum to service-learning courses and initiatives. With a particular focus on families in their community, volunteers work with students with disabilities in K-12 schools and host a dance marathon to support the local hospital.
