Inside Higher Ed has a great look at a unique partnership between Widener University (PA) and a Costa Rican farm that helps support sustainable agriculture in Latin America and gives Widener students a caffeine jolt.
Cultivation to Cup is the idea of a local PA coffee roaster and a Widener professor who sought ways to teach his students about sustainable agriculture and the benefits of organic, fair-trade products.
Students help facilitate the program through a three-credit course and visit the farm in Las Lajas as part of their coursework. All proceeds from the sale of beans at Widener contribute to the travel, equipment and research costs.
Since the launch of the program in April 2013, Cultivation to Cup has created a consortium with four other PA colleges.
