American University (DC) and George Washington University (DC) recently signed a pact to power significant portions of their campuses with solar power by 2020.
Together, the universities purchased solar power at a fixed rate for the next 5 years. In the long run, this will save money as energy costs increase and help eliminate more than 70,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide, or about the equivalent of taking 12,500 cars off the road.
The switch to solar power aligns, the campuses say, with their overall sustainability goals and commitments to “practicing what we teach.”
