Continued Growth of Hispanic-Serving Institutions

Excelencia in Education and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities recently released a joint set of resources on Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) for the 2018-19 academic year.

The data release identifies 539 institutions across 27 states as having met the HSI enrollment eligibility requirement during the 2018-19 year, an increase from 523 institutions in 2017-2018. The data highlights the geographic concentration of HSIs, with 67 percent located within three states (California, Texas, and New York) and Puerto Rico. Notably, though HSIs represented only 17 percent of all colleges and universities, they collectively enrolled more than two-thirds of all Latino undergraduate students. Nearly half (46 percent) of all students enrolled at HSIs were Latino.

The resources highlight the following data on HSIs:

1. The number of HSIs has increased by 93 percent, growing from 280 institutions in 2008-09 to 539 during the 2018-19 year.

2. Thirty-five states across the nation have emerging HSIs (defined as those institutions where Hispanic undergraduate full-time equivalent enrollment is between 15.0 and 24.9 percent).

3. Nearly 70 percent of HSIs are public institutions. Of these, forty-three percent are public two-year colleges, 28 percent are private four-year institutions, 26 percent are public four-year institutions, and 3 percent are private two-year colleges.
