New Report: Education Deserts Limit Educational Opportunity
Title: Place Matters: A Closer Look at Education Deserts
Source: Third Way
Author: Nick Hillman
Third Way recently published a report by Nick Hillman that discusses how geography influences postsecondary educational opportunities.
According to the report, 24 percent of the nation’s 124 commuting zones are education deserts: geographic locations where residents have little-to-no access to nearby public colleges.
The report recommends that policymakers should consider geography when working to improve access to higher education, and rather than focusing on distance, policymakers should increase financial aid to students living in education deserts to defray the costs associated with enrolling at colleges that may be geographically inconvenient.
