The Education Trust has published a new report that examines how well each state’s public colleges and universities are serving Black students. Key findings include:

  • Black students are underrepresented at public four-year institutions in 37 of the 41 states examined.
  • Black students at four-year institutions are at least 15 percentage points less likely to attend selective institutions than their White peers in 18 of the 36 states examined. Nine of the 10 states with the largest enrollment gaps are located in the South.
  • Black graduates are underrepresented among associate degree earners in 33 of the 41 states examined.
  • Roughly half of the 41 states included in the report have double-digit gaps between the shares of Black and White graduates who earn a bachelor’s degree.
