Mapping Snapshot: Managing Internationalization Efforts

This post is the fifth and final in a series of snapshots from ACE’s report, Mapping Internationalization on U.S. Campuses: 2017 Edition.

Colleges and universities are looking for ways to manage internationalization on campus as such efforts increase. According to Mapping Internationalization on U.S. Campuses: 2017 Edition, 72 percent of responding institutions indicate that campus internationalization accelerated in recent years and they are optimistic about their internationalization progress.

More institutions have established policies, procedures, and guidance to develop campus internationalization between 2011 and 2016. Internationalization has widely become an administrative-intensive effort, managed by a specific office and/or a senior international officer.

The report also illustrates increasing opportunities in internationally focused professional development for faculty. However, still only 10 percent of the responding institutions considered international engagement as a factor in faculty promotion and tenure decisions.

Mapping shows that the current focus for internationalization efforts is mainly external, such as student mobility and international partnerships. However, looking into the future, the report suggested that institutions should pay more attention to internal internationalization efforts such as “curriculum, co-curriculum, and student learning outcomes” and “faculty policies and practices.”
