The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee held a hearing Tuesday on “Strengthening Minority Serving Institutions: Best Practices and Innovations for Student Success.”
Marybeth Gasman, director of the Center for Minority Serving Institutions at the University of Pennsylvania, discussed the critical role MSIs have in moving more students into and through college–and taking a look at the scope of these colleges and universities, you can see why:
Minority Serving Institutions by the Numbers
599 Minority Serving Institutions in the United States
34 Tribal Colleges and Universities
105 Historically Black Colleges and Universities
315 Hispanic-serving Institutions
145 Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions
3.6 million undergraduates are enrolled in MSIs – 20 percent of all undergraduate students.
Over 50 percent of all MSI students receive Pell Grants.
Tuition at MSIs is on average 50 percent lower than majority institutions.
Facts are from Dr. Gasman’s testimony.
